  • Sunni - majority of are of this sect.
    • Most power
    • Not as fanatical
  • Shi’ah - minority Muslim sect.
    • More radical & fanatical
    • Responsible for many terrorist acts

Why do they hate US?
  • Many ME Muslims see the US as responsible for many of their problems.
    • US & Israel alliance
      • Palestinians(Muslims) want their homeland; Israel stands in the way.
      • Israel must be removed.

Why are we so concerned with the Middle East & Israel?
  • Oil - the supply is vital to the national security of the U.S.
  • Peace & stability in the ME is critical to the U.S.
  • Israel - only non-Muslim country & strongest U.S. ally in the ME.
  • U.S./Israel alliance seen as crucial to maintaining peace in the ME.

Munich Olympics 1972
  • Group called “Black September” took Israeli hostages.
  • First major international terrorist event.
  • All hostages killed.

Beirut 1983
  • Hizballah terrorist group bombs U.S. embassy, 87 killed.
  • Marine barracks destroyed by suicide bomber, 242 killed.

Egypt 1985
  • Terrorists hijack the cruise ship “Achille Lauro”; one American killed.
  • Freed terrorists intercepted by U.S. jets and jailed in Italy.

TWA Hijacking 1985
  • Hijacked jet in Lebanon.
  • Navy serviceman executed.
  • Hostages released in prisoner exchange after 17 days.

1988 Pan Am 747
  • Jumbo jet destroyed by bomb over Scotland killing 270.
  • Libya terrorists responsible.

  • WTC damaged by truck bomb in underground garage.
  • Terrorists tracked down and arrested.
  • Another plot to bomb various locations in NY is foiled.
