  • 1895 - War for independence in Cuba against Spanish rule begins.
  • 1896 - Another uprising against Spanish rule in the Philippines begins.

  • U.S. was eager to flex it’s military muscle.
  • Spain was seen as a cruel ruler of Cuba - Americans favored the rebels.
  • Yellow Journalism - newspapers made up stories to sell papers.
