The End
  • Both sides were exhausted and nearly broke after 4 years of war.
  • Oct. 1917, Russian Revolution, Czar removed from power, removes
  • U.S. entry in 1917 on the allies side made the difference.
  • Facing starvation & mutiny, Germany agreed to an armistice.

Versailles Treaty
  • Germany blamed for the war.
  • Territories given over to allies.
  • Reparations: had to pay for the cost of the war!
  • Terms were harsh; England & France wanted revenge.

  • German economy destroyed.
  • Some Germans felt they were betrayed; didn’t lose just gave up.
  • Harsh Versailles terms made them bitter.
  • Chaos & unrest in Germany.
  • Set the stage for Hitler.

The Red Scare
  • Following the 1917 Bolshevik Revolution in Russia, America was fearful of political radicals.
  • The Red Scare refers to the threat of Communist radicals sabotaging our government.

Race Riots & the KKK
  • Attacks on minorities increased as America intolerant of minority views.  The KKK grew to its largest membership.

Labor Unrest
  • In 1919, many workers went on strike to protest long work days & low pay.  This led to violence in some areas.

Civil Liberties Restricted
  • Many white Americans were suspicious of ethnic Europeans and anyone who criticized the war.
    • Espionage Act - made it illegal to say anything that would discourage men from registering for the draft.

  • Sedition Act - made it illegal to speak disrespectfully of either the govt. or its symbols (flag,Constitution,uniform).

New Job Opportunities
  • Blacks & women were offered jobs usually held by white men.
  • However, after the war many of those jobs were again taken by the men.

Isolationist
  • America wanted nothing to do with another European war.
  • Wilson’s plan for peace 14 Points – rejected.
  • No League Of Nations.
  • Worry about our own problems.
