  • German plan for victory
  • Invade neutral Belgium to defeat old enemy France
  • Surround & capture Paris
  • Plan failed & bogged down
  • The plan would be used again  in  WW II

Trench Warfare
  • Stalemate-war had bogged down; neither side could break through.
  • Enemy trenches faced each other only yards apart.
  • Horrible conditions: mud, corpses, rats.
  • No Man’s Land: killing zone between the trenches.

Machine Guns
  • One soldier now could replace 40.
  • Soldiers could no longer survive massed assaults against the enemy.

Bombardment!
  • Artillery - huge cannons firing shells weighing tons.
  • Killed more than any other weapon.
  • Some shelling would last for days.

  • with cloth covering the wooden frame.
  • Top speed - maybe 100 mph.

  • Zeppelins-German dirigibles bombed London & other cities.
  • Filled explosive hydrogen.
  • Not very effective.
  • First time cities targeted from the air.
  • Beginning of total war.

Chemical Warfare
  • Attempt to break the stalemate.
  • Terror weapon-panic & confusion.
  • 3 Types of Gas
    • Chlorine-burns the lungs/throat
    • Tear Gas-temporary blindness/choking
    • Mustard-most dreaded, skin blisters on contact
