Text Box: The new year brought only a few changes to the Coulee City Elementary/Middle School, but one of them is significant. Starting this week, kindergarten is being offered five days a week. from 8:30 until 3:00, the same as all other grades.
Research has clearly shown that kindergarten students who attend school on a full-time basis are much better prepared for first grade. The better start in kindergarten and first grade allows them to be more successful after first grade as well.
Before we presented the idea for full-time kindergarten to the Board of Education for approval, we did some research and talked to teachers and administrators Text Box: from other schools where full-day kindergarten programs have been implemented. The research results and the responses from others were consistently positive. It is a program that benefits children, especially those who may be a little behind the others when they enter school.
The funding for additional two days comes from a state grant that is used by most schools to lower class sizes. These funds are not part of our basic education funding and can only be used for specific allowable projects. Extending kindergarten to five days a week is allowable.
Text Box: WEATHER ISSUES
The cold and windy weather we have been having reminded me to remind all parents and students to be alert to a possible school delay or closure due to weather conditions. We have a system to notify all Spokane TV stations and all radio stations in the area should we determine that a schedule change is necessary.
Please do not call the schools or the bus garage for information about school delays or closures. You will get faster response by watching TV and our lines will remain open for our needs on these busy mornings.
Following are some of the stations you may tune in to for school closure information: KEYG—1490 AM; KEY-98.5 FM; KPQ—560 AM, or watch KHQ—channel 6; KREM—channel 2, or KXLY—channel 4. Also, please keep the school informed of any change in your students emergency contact information for our files.
