Text Box: Principal’s Message. . . . . . . . . . . Edward Fisk
Text Box: Last month we had a Learning Improvement Day (LID) when students were dismissed and teachers spent time analyzing the writing curriculum and the requirements for students to be successful on the writing portion of the WASL Tests. On November 12, we have another LID Day, and this time we will focus on the science curriculum, which is new this year, and the School Improvement Plan.

The time the teachers have to work on curriculum development and analysis of the WASL Tests is time well spent. We often hear that teachers, students and schools must be held more “accountable.” This means Text Box: that the students must perform well on tests, such as the WASL, that are prepared by someone other than the classroom teacher.

I don’t think any teacher or parent wants the students to perform poorly on the tests, even if we do not believe that the testing program is worth the time and expense that we must invest in it. Consequently, we continue to do our best to help our students be as well prepared as possible.

Attendance and paying attention in class are important for high performance levels too. We encourage students to be in school unless they are sick Text Box: or have a family emergency. Last year, several students who did not pass the WASL were just a few points short of the passing mark. Maybe they missed something taught in class on a day they were absent that could have made a difference?
