Text Box: As I write this message, we are in the last few days of the second trimester of this school year. The days have gone by fast, but a lot has happened.
Congratulations
Two of the more exciting events of this past month were the selection of Mrs. Norma Charlton, our kindergarten teacher, as the Coulee City Citizen of the Year, and the selection of Ms. Tami Spurbeck, our reading specialist and 5th grade teacher, as KHQ Teacher of the Month. We are very proud of the recognition these two excellent teachers have received, and we congratulate both of them.
WASL Tests
Now we need to start thinking more seriously about the WASL tests, which will be given during the two week period starting on April 11. In our school, testing will take place on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday of each week. Fourth and Seventh grades will take tests in math, reading and writing. Fifth and eighth grades will take science tests.
New Drug/Alcohol Policy
The Board has approved a new policy that provides for random drug testing of athletics and all students who Text Box: elect to participate in extra curricular activities. The new policy also calls for stricter penalties for those who violate the alcohol/drug/tobacco rules. This code applies to all middle school and high school students who participate in sports or other school activities. It will go into effect immediately after spring break.
8th Grade to H.S.
Starting next week (March 14) all eighth grade students will go to the high school for their first class of the third trimester. We scheduled this class so that students would have the opportunity to get some “hands on” learning experience in the shop. Since there to too many student for one section (Almira is also sending their eighth grade), students will divide their time between the shop class and a career exploration class . Students will return to the Coulee City school after the first period.
Artist In Residence
The PTO is planning to sponsor an Artist in Residence for our school this spring. We are also writing a grant to have an Artist in Residence here again next year.
The Artist in Residence will spend from two to five days in the district working with teachers and students in his/her specialty. There are many possibilities from art, music and drama. This program will provide some excellent Text Box: Coulee City School
