Text Box: Principal’s Message. . . . . . . . . . . Edward Fisk
Text Box: We have gotten off to a great start for the 2004-05 school year. Enrollment in grades K-8 was 108 at the end of the first week. We have grown to 110 as of today, October 7. The largest class is 8th grade (20 students) and the smallest is 1st grade (5 students).
Starting after Winter Break, kindergarten will be offered every day, just as all other classes in the school. Research has shown that students who attend kindergarten for a full day every day make significantly more social and academic gains than those who attend for only a half day or every other day. We have some state special programs money available to pay the costs of the extra time for Text Box: kindergarten.
Because of the small number of students in both 1st and 2nd grades, we have put them together to become our first combined class. There are a total of 12 students in the combined class (5 in 1st grade and 7 in 2nd grade). Mrs. Thiry is the teacher, and she says she is enjoying the challenge and believes it is better to have a class of 12, even if it has two grades, than a class of only 5.
We are especially proud of our fifth graders, who achieved one the four highest levels of improvement in the state on the 2004 WASL scores last year. Their efforts resulted in our school receiving a special award, the Apple Award, Text Box: which includes $25,000 to be used on a project that the students help select.
I continue to find the job of principal of Coulee City Elementary/Middle School to be rewarding and interesting. That is primarily because I spend the days with great people. Our staff and students are the BEST.
This newsletter is short because most of the “news” about our school appeared in the district newsletter that was mailed to all residents in Coulee City, Hartline and Almira last week. If you did not get a copy, give us a call. We have some extras.
