Course Description

This math course will immerse students in a challenging problem based curriculum. Students will be involved in doing mathematics, therefore, students will be exploring, investigating, constructing, justifying, defending, explaining, predicting and describing their mathematics.

Course Objective

The objective of this class is to develop students who value mathematics and are confident in their ability to do mathematics. This will be evident in students who become comfortable problem solving, reasoning, and communicating about their math.

Homework is a regular part of the curriculum and should be expected on most days. Homework will always be due at the beginning of the next class period. When an entire assignment is neatly completed with work shown and handed in on time students will receive a minimum score of 70%.

If the entire assignment is neatly completed with work shown and handed in LATE students will receive a maximum score of 50%. Late assignments must be completed within one week of their due dates.

All assignments should be kept in the student’s math section of their 3 ring binder for the duration of the quarter.

Grade sheets will be distributed to students every Friday. I encourage you to review these with your son/daughter. Late assignments turned in on Friday will not be reflected on the grade sheet until the following Friday.

It is the student’s responsibility to check for assignments after being absent. Students can check the classroom homework calendar or check a classmate’s assignment calendar. Students may also need to schedule time for extra help or to make up work with Mr. Matthewson. Assignments which are missed because of excused absences may be submitted for full value up to the number of days missed.

Student responsibility will be stressed as a solution to many of these issues.

Other information

7th grade math students will be required to meet the Washington State Essential Academic Learning Requirements for mathematics. They will take the Washington Assessment of Student Learning (WASL) in the spring.
