Research Checklist

 

 

Each area of study will have its own checklist.  Every person in the group is responsible to answer the questions about their area of research.  You will then report back to your group about what you found out.

 

 

Plants

  Choose 10 plants that Lewis and Clark discovered or documented.  Answer the questions and complete the following tasks for each plant that you choose.

  • Where was the plant found?
  • Is it a flower, a tree, or something else?
  • Did the Indians use the plant for something? If so, what did they use it for?
  • What does the plant look like?
  • Draw a picture of the plant if possible.

  Name a few of the plants that Lewis and Clark discovered that had never been heard of before their journey.

  Why do you think it was important for them to document the many different plants that they saw?

 

The Land

  About how many miles was the trail that Lewis and Clark traveled?

  What were the tools that Lewis and Clark used to make their maps?

  Where did they stand when surveying the land to make maps?

  Name the rivers that Lewis and Clark traveled on while on their journey.

  What states (present day) did their route take them through?

  At one point they came to three forks in the river.  Who did they name each fork for?

  What mountain ranges did the Corps of Discovery travel over?

  In your opinion what was the hardest part of the journey for the Corps?

  Why were the maps that Lewis and Clark made so important?

  Compare some of the maps that Lewis and Clark made to a map of the present day United States.  How accurate were they in their maps?

  Draw a map of Lewis and Clark's route.  Include the places where major events in their expedition took place.

 

 

Animals

  Choose 10 animals that Lewis and Clark discovered or documented on their journey.  Answer the questions and complete the following tasks for each animal that you choose.

  • Was the animal fierce?
  • What did it look like (size, color, etc.)?
  • Where do you see these animals? Describe their habitat.
  • Did you eat this animal?
  • Draw a sketch of the animal.

  What are some of the animals that Lewis and Clark documented that had never been heard of before their journey?

  Why do you think it was important that Lewis and Clark document the many different animals that they saw on their expedition?

 

 

Native Americans

  Choose 10 of the Indian Tribes that Lewis and Clark encountered on their expedition.  Answer the questions and complete the following tasks for each tribe that you choose.

  • Where did Lewis and Clark encounter the tribe? (use present day locations)
  • Was the tribe friendly or hostile?  Describe Lewis and Clark's encounter with the tribe.
  • Were the tribes hunters or farmers?

  Draw a map of Lewis and Clark's journey.  Label the map with the locations of the different tribes.

  What was the name of the famous Native American guide on the Lewis and Clark Expedition.  What contributions did she make to the expedition?
